Populism in Latin America Part II

Wow. Yesterday I said I hoped U.S. media would finally pick up on the nuances of populism in Latin America, and today the NYT did just that. The article uses the word "leftist" only once, and focuses on the rise of populist leaders in the context of the disintegration of traditional parties. Let's hope this reporting trend continues, so that we can get past the wearying stereotypes.

Yes, all of a sudden the media have noticed that populism and socialism are not the same. I wonder who tipped them off.

The bigger question: does the media reporting seep into the minds of Bush administration officials, or do we get more Hitler comparisons?

I keep meaning to read that article--I haven't had time yet. But I'll do so and comment on it.

Castañeda's article is really a good read. Also Hugo Chavez's profile carried by the same magazine is good stuff.
